Salt and Light

  • by

This week, Pastor Shaq Hager continues our series on the Sermon on the Mount by focusing on the way in which Jesus informs His disciples that they’re salt and light in the world. The implication for the disciples is clear. Their lives are to be distinct from the prevailing culture. They’re not to take on the ethics or values of the Roman Empire, but the Kingdom of God. Their lives are to be markers, or signposts, of the Kingdom. And, to do this, to be distinctive in a way that the disciples and the earliest Christian communities can influence the broader culture is to remain in Jesus, to learn His teachings, and to do what He did. Today, in our polarized world, Jesus’ invitation remains. Jesus’ followers are to be salt and light, ambassadors of the Kingdom, living in ways that demonstrate love, mercy, justice, and reconciliation.
